My grandfather would have been 79 today.
I randomly remembered that today would have been his birthday. It's hard to believe it's been 4 years since we last celebrated his birthday with him. So much has happened in those years; now I'm about to graduate from college and go on with my life, and the last time he had a birthday I was on the brink of graduating from high school and going on to college. I sometimes wonder what he would have said to me about some of the things that have happened since I last saw him. But the one thing I do know he would have said (on multiple occasions) was, "The way I feel right now I will not need to eat breakfast in the morning."
Sound confusing? Let me explain.
We often had dinner over at my grandparents' house (a major benefit of living only 10 minutes away from them). After we'd had something along the lines of barbecued meat, vegetables, Jello salad, and dessert, my grandpa would push back his chair and say, "The way I feel right now I will not need to eat breakfast in the morning," which was basically his way of saying, "I'm full!" At one dinner, I decided to beat him to it, but I said something close to "Well, I won't need breakfast in the morning." He looked me straight in the eye and told me that I'd said it wrong, and went on to explain exactly how to say it.
"You have to start with 'the way I feel right now', because that gives you a loophole in case you get hungry later. Also, you have to say 'need to eat breakfast', because then in the morning you can still eat breakfast even if you don't really need to."
Yep, my grandpa was king of the loophole. Almost every dinner after that, he'd look at me after we'd finished eating, and ask me how I felt. I think I replied correctly every time after that. :)
I learned a lot of things from my grandpa (including a lot of answers to Jeopardy questions and the proper use of sarcasm) but I think one of the things I'll always remember is how to properly express my fullness after a meal, with loopholes to ensure that I can eat again when I'm hungry. :)
If only you could figure out how to use those loopholes on homework assignments.
